10 Day Tour From Rome to Milan

March 16-26, 2016

This amazing trip begins with three (3) full days in Rome to visit the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Square and Basilica, the Trevi Fountain and much more!

Next, we will visit San Gimignano, a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy.  Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form "an unforgettable skyline."  From there, we will travel to Florence - the gorgeous capital of Tuscany and birthplace of the Renaissance.

With stops in picture perfect Pisa, we can enjoy a wine-tasting event at Verrazzano Castle and a spectacular drive through the Apennine Mountains to the romantic city of Venice.  While in Venice, we will enjoy excursions to St. Marks Square and Basilica and a private water taxi to see Venice by night.

Before our return, we will make our way to Verona - the setting of Romeo and Juliet before traveling to Milan for more amazing sights.  Milan is a global capital of fashion and design.  Home to the national stock exchange, it's a financial hub also known for its high-end dining and shopping.  The Gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral and the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent, housing Leonardo da Vinci's fresco "The Last Supper," testify to centuries of art and culture.

August 3, 2016 – Arkansas Northeastern College’s Center for Allied Technologies project received another boost from local industry today as Tenaris has pledged $150,000 toward the College’s newest project.

Tenaris is a leading supplier of tubes and related services for the world’s energy industry and certain other industrial applications. The company expanded its presence in the United States when it acquired Maverick Tube Corporation in 2006, which included a site in Blytheville, Arkansas.

Tenaris is committed to the communities where employees live and work with the core of their community investment centered on education.  This strategy is based on the belief that knowledge is essential for growing, developing and enriching people’s lives. 

“Education and training is at the center of Tenaris’s culture.  Supporting institutions such as ANC extends the academic reach to the community,” said Hernan Brondino, Tenaris US Director of its welded division. “It’s through initiatives like this that we, as a team, provide unique opportunities to build more than skill sets, but enable and empower students to develop and grow.” 

Tenaris has a long history of working with Arkansas Northeastern College. Tenaris has donated over $100,000 to ANC for the purchase of equipment for the Advanced Manufacturing Program and the College’s Electrical and Welding Programs. In addition to monetary donations, a donation of pipe was given to ANC Secondary Center to be used in practical application for high school students, and they participate in the post-secondary internship with ANC for students pursuing the Steel Technology degree. 

This is in addition to the company’s other local educational initiatives such as the Academic Excellence Afterschool Program, a partnership with Blytheville Public Schools, which began in 2010, a high school internship program for seniors from Armorel, Blytheville and Gosnell school districts and a merit award program, which recognizes outstanding juniors and seniors from Blytheville High School.

Tenaris’ community involvement is even more diverse as the company also supports local adults looking for a better future.  Tenaris was one of the first industry sponsors of ANC’s W.O.R.K. Program. Workforce Orientation & Retraining Keys (WORK) is a 60 clock hour program designed to lift under-skilled local residents living in poverty out of poverty and, simultaneously, advance economic development by expanding the local workforce.

“Our College and our community are so very fortunate to have tremendous partners like Tenaris,” said ANC President, Dr. James Shemwell, citing a long relationship with the company that includes extensive training for Tenaris employees by ANC.

“Arkansas Northeastern College has worked with Tenaris to provide new-hire training and other classes as needed for employee advancement, and we look forward to continuing that training in our new Center for Allied Technologies,” added Shemwell.

The Center for Allied Technologies, to be located on the ANC Main Campus, will actually decrease the College’s overall facilities by 30,000 square feet by consolidating the Burdette Center, Harry L. Crisp Center, and the Aircraft Metals and Engineering Center—with an estimated costs savings for the College of approximately $100,000 a year in maintenance.  This new facility will feature a headquarters for the College’s customized training force—The Solutions Group, including general purpose classrooms, electrical classroom & lab, mechanical classroom/lab, safety classroom/lab, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Classroom & Laboratory, computer classroom, and large multi-purpose room. Additionally, a world-class welding laboratory will be available for students.

Secondary Center students from area high schools also will be served by this facility through classroom & laboratories for advanced manufacturing, welding, criminal justice, education, and construction/carpentry.  The design incorporates a computer lab for the Secondary Center. Also featured is an aircraft hangar/lab, combination non-destructive testing (NDT) & composites laboratory, and general purpose classrooms to fully accommodate ANC’s Federal Aviation Administration—certified Aviation Maintenance Program.

This latest gift reflects Tenaris’ commitment to being a strong community steward. The Tenaris pledge to the Arkansas Northeastern College Center for Allied Technology will help fund the Mechanical Laboratory, two general classrooms and a conference room space in the new facility.

“We have had the strongest workforce training program in the state for a number of years, we are glad to finally see plans for a premier facility on the horizon for these programs, and we cannot thank Tenaris enough for helping this facility become a reality,” said Shemwell. Construction work on the project is expected to begin in 2016 after the completion of design work for the new Center with an anticipated opening date in Summer 2018.

DENSO North America Foundation (DNAF) has become the latest supporter of the Arkansas Northeastern College (ANC) Center for Allied Technologies with their announcement of a $150,000 contribution toward the project. DNAF has approved the project for funding over a three-year period.

As one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers with operations in 32 countries and regions, DENSO provides capabilities in research and design, and development, manufacturing and delivery of advanced automotive technology, systems and components. 

“The DENSO North America Foundation is pleased to support ANC’s efforts to build a skilled, knowledgeable and well-trained workforce to serve industry,” said George Harguess, President of DENSO Manufacturing Arkansas in Osceola. “We appreciate the standards of excellence that are held by Arkansas Northeastern College and its commitment to education.”  

“We are so grateful for the relationship that Arkansas Northeastern College has with DENSO.  The local plant has been a long-time supporter of ANC with participation in the WORK Program and other technical programs, as well as sponsoring ANC Foundation activities. We appreciate their past support and this generous gift toward our Center for Allied Technologies and look forward to beginning construction on the project next year,” said Dr. James Shemwell, President of Arkansas Northeastern College.

Because of their vision for the community and the development of a skilled workforce, the DNAF’s contribution to the ANC Center for Allied Technologies will provide funds to complete and equip two separate areas of the facility: the DENSO Manufacturing Classroom and the DENSO Computer Laboratory & Library.

Currently the facility is in the architectural and engineering planning stage, which will take approximately one year, with construction expected to take two years. The 85,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in 2018.

The Center for Allied Technologies, to be located on the ANC Main Campus, will actually decrease the College’s overall facilities by 30,000 square feet by consolidating the Burdette Center, Harry L. Crisp Center, and the ACME Center—with an estimated costs savings for the College of approximately $100,000 a year in maintenance.  This new facility will feature a headquarters for the College’s customized training force—The Solutions Group, including general purpose classrooms, electrical classroom & lab, mechanical classroom/lab, safety classroom/lab, HVAC classroom & lab, computer classroom, and large multi-purpose room. Additionally, a world-class welding laboratory will be available for students.

Since its inception in 2001, the DENSO North America Foundation, philanthropic arm of global auto parts supplier DENSO’s North American headquarters, DENSO International America, Inc., has been dedicated to advancing the auto industry through grants to colleges and universities. The Foundation provides students with technology, tools and experiences similar to that of the professional workplace they’ll experience after graduation.

ANC instructor, James Hartley, recently won a merit award for the creation of his app – Kenna. This is what Hartley had to say about Kenna…

Kenna is a basic informational app that I created for my college students. It is a free application. It will help me stay connected with my students throughout the semester. It also provides quick access to specific institutional resources.

Kenna provides a crime news RSS feed, a list of all the classes that I teach, course syllabi, a direct call feature, an institutional phone directory, office hours, current class schedule, email form, student handbook, academic calendar, college newsletter, campus map, task scheduler, and career opportunities.

Kenna also provides remote notifications and local notifications that remind students of quizzes and exams as well as other institutional information. Students expressed interest in an app of this nature, so with that encouragement, I focused my efforts on creating Kenna. 

ANC Board Approves Construction of Center for Allied Technologies

ANC BOARD APPROVES CONSTRUCTION OF CENTER FOR ALLIED TECHNOLOGIES

Members of the Arkansas Northeastern College Board of Trustees gathered for their regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, where they approved the financing plan and construction of the new Center for Allied Technologies. The Board’s action follows commitments made by the ANC Foundation Board of Governors at their Spring meeting on April 9 of $325,000 toward construction and $250,000 toward equipment. The College anticipates an annual cost savings of $100,000 through consolidating the Harry L. Crisp, Aircraft & Metals Engineering (ACME), and Burdette Centers which the new facility will replace.

The proposed facility will be located on the ANC Main Campus just south of the Angela Wren Nursing & Allied Health Building. The new center will feature the headquarters for The Solutions Group, including general purpose classrooms, electrical classroom & lab, mechanical classroom/lab, safety classroom/lab, HVAC classroom & lab, computer classroom, and large multi-purpose room. A world-class welding laboratory will serve secondary, post-secondary, and customized training needs. Also featured will be an aircraft hangar/lab, combination non-destructive testing (NDT) & composites laboratory, and general purpose classrooms to fully accommodate the aviation maintenance program, both secondary and post-secondary. In addition to welding and aviation maintenance, Secondary/Technical Center students from our area high schools also will be served on the Main Campus by classroom & lab facilities for advanced manufacturing, criminal justice, education, and construction/carpentry. Medical professions secondary training will be delivered at the existing Wren building to co-locate with the other allied health professions.

According to ANC President Dr. James Shemwell, the location of the center is strategic in that it represents a plan to rebrand professions, as well as college education for high-demand, well-paying professions, in the minds of young people, parents, teachers, and the general public by locating the facilities where most people associate as “college.” Additionally, the center would be located within walking distance from the Department of Workforce Services, more commonly referred to as the “unemployment office.” Architectural & engineering work, including a comprehensive campus drainage plan, is anticipated to require one year, followed by a two-year construction timetable. The projected grand opening for the new Center is August 2018.

Arkansas Northeastern College has received another pledge toward its $13 million Center for Allied Technology. Phillip Dever of Dever Industrial Maintenance Solutions has committed $75,000 toward the project which will fund the electrical laboratory in the 85,000 square foot facility.

Dever, a longtime supporter of Arkansas Northeastern College, serves on the ANC Foundation Board and made his gift known at the meeting of the Board last week.

ANC President Dr. James Shemwell said, “Mr. Dever has been an ardent supporter of our College and understands the importance of providing education and training for the area workforce. He volunteers his time and knowledge to Skills USA at the State level and his local insight informs our training strategy here at the College. We greatly appreciate this generous gift and his continued support of Arkansas Northeastern College.”

ANC and Mississippi County Extension Agency Offer Two New Classes

Two new pilot programs addressing health and nutrition issues will be offered this spring in Mississippi County. Living Well with Diabetes is a multi-session program for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes and their families. Classes will be held at Arkansas Northeastern College, main campus, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on April 10, 17, 27 and May 8. The fee is $12.00 for all four sessions and pre-registration is required.

Another pilot program features Mediterranean Cooking Classes. Learn to cook dishes from both Eastern and Western Mediterranean countries. The Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle approach to healthy eating that includes a balanced variety of foods and daily exercise. The cost is $20 per person per class. Participants will cook an authentic Mediterranean meal. Western Mediterranean cuisine class will be held May 12^th and Eastern Mediterranean cuisine class will be held May 19^th at Blytheville New Tech High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required and class space is limited.
